Duane “Keffe D” Davis, the former gang leader convicted of orchestrating the 1996 murder of legendary rapper Tupac Shakur, has been sentenced to at least 40 years in prison.

Davis, 63, was found guilty of first-degree murder with the use of a deadly weapon in September, following a trial over the fatal shooting that shocked the music industry and remains one of hip-hop’s most infamous cases.

Tupac was shot in a drive-by attack in Las Vegas on September 7, 1996, while in the city to attend a heavyweight boxing match featuring Mike Tyson. The rapper died six days later after being placed on life support.

Davis, a former leader of the South Side Compton Crips, was arrested in September 2024, nearly three decades after the shooting. His trial began in a Las Vegas court in August, bringing renewed attention to the long-running investigation into the rapper’s death.

At the beginning of the proceedings, Davis pleaded not guilty to a murder charge involving the use of a deadly weapon in connection with gang activity. However, after approximately three hours of deliberations, the jury found him guilty of first-degree murder with the use of a deadly weapon, with the intent to promote, further or assist a criminal gang.

The jury’s verdict marked a significant development in a case that had remained unresolved for years, despite continued public interest in the circumstances surrounding Tupac’s death.

When presiding judge Carli Kierny asked Davis on Tuesday whether he had anything to say before sentencing, he responded: “I’m good. I’m gonna appeal this case for sure.”

Before handing down the sentence, Kierny addressed the gravity of the crime, emphasising the devastating impact of taking another person’s life.

“You don’t get to take a man from his family,” the judge told Davis.

“You don’t get to take his very life, his whole future from him, and just walk away from it. Especially when that man is Tupac Shakur. The world never forgot about him and his death.”
